may 7, 2018 at 10:44am greetings! please join us for our may 21st lunch and technical presentation. doug zentz will be presenting an introduction to ashrae 189.1, “standards for the design of high performance buildings; except low-rise residential” registration will close wednesday, may 16th at noon . walk-ins are no longer able to attend luncheons. if you are planning to attend you must pre-register. the presentation will address the following in reference to ashrae 189.1; (a) why have it?, (b) relationship to other ashrae standards, and (c) what is in the standard. the content of the details of the standard will be covered in a general context (due to time) as it will outline the areas of the standard, show mandatory elements within each area of the standard, and then illustrate the two paths of compliance (prescriptive and performance) for each area of the standard. doug zentz douglas f. zentz, associate professor, is the program coordinator for the hvacr programs within the college of engineering technology at ferris state university. he received his bachelor degree in mechanical engineering technology from purdue university in 1980 and his master degree in career and technical education from ferris state university in 2007. he is a past president of west michigan ashrae, a past rvc of student activities for region v, and past chair for student activities within ashrae. doug received the distinguished service award from ashrae in 2015 and is the rmcr for region v. in the area of professional speaking, he has been the guest speaker at over 50 share article monday apr 16 2018 ashrae columbus scholarships monday, april 16, 2018 at 8:24am the columbus chapter will award one (1) non-renewable $1,500 scholarship annually to a qualified high school senior student and ne (1) non-renewable $1,500 scholarship annually to a qualified college student who demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in engineering. eligible entries for the current available scholarship to be awarded must be submitted by 4/30/2018. scholarship to be awarded on 5/28/2018. criteria for applicants: 1. current enrollment in an engineering or engineering technology curriculum accredited by the accreditation board for engineering and technology (abet) or other accrediting agency recognized by ashrae. students pursuing an associate degree in engineering technology need not be enrolled in an abet accredited program, but must be pursuing a course of study, which traditionally has been a preparatory curriculum for a career in hvac&r. or 1. current senior grade level enrollment in high school. 2. current service or plans to serve the hvac&r profession. 3. need for financial assistance. 4. demonstrated leadership ability. 5. character attributes. 6. either currently live in, or plan on attending school within the ashrae columbus chapter territory. if a student does not meet this requirement, the submitted letter of recommendation must be from article wednesday apr 04 2018 ashrae columbus april 2018 event wednesday, april 4, 2018 at 1:13pm please join us for our april 16th lunch and technical presentation. phil stafa will be presenting a program on the new aep building design in new albany, ohio. registration will close wednesday, april 11h at noon . walk-ins are no longer able to attend luncheons. if you are planning to attend you must pre-register. the new aep transmission building in new albany is an all-electric, leed certified building with estimated energy savings of more than 30% over ashrae 90.1-2007. phil will provide an overview of the hvac systems used including variable refrigerant flow air conditioning and dedicated outside air rooftop units with heat recovery. some of the challenges to energy savings included a full service kitchen, an atrium smoke exhaust system, variable occupancy and end user maintenance requirements. lessons learned will be presented. this project is scheduled to be nominated for a regional ashrae award. phil stafa phil stafa has over 20 years of experience in the hvac industry as a consultant in central ohio. he is a registered professional engineer in the state of ohio and is a leed accredited professional specializing in building design and construction. phil is a long time ashrae member and served as chapter president from 2010-2011. he graduated from the ohio state on the impact of changing fan regulations. registration will close wednesday, march14 th at noon . walk-ins are no longer able to attend luncheons. if you are planning to attend you must pre-register. jim will present on 'fan regulation and its impact'. the talk will cover regulations, including those from the department of energy. also, codes and standards affecting fan selection, both from the perspective of the fan manufacturers and design professionals. fan efficiency ratings, requirements and controllability as it relates to other building systems. emerging trends within the industry, which have evolved as a result of the changing regulations. jim meats in the industry since 1982, jim graduated with a b.s. in architectural engineering from kansas state university and is a licensed professional engineer. jim started his career as a consulting engineer, designing mechanical and electrical systems for commercial, industrial and institutional projects. he currently serves on the
